BRYANT Jean  YYYY-2003 age 69
Edgcumbe Methodist Church was full for the funeral of Jean Bryant of Porthleven who died at West Cornwall Hospital, aged 69 years. The funeral was conducted by the Rev Margaret Wallwork and Pastor Bill Reed. Cremation followed at Penmount and the interment of ashes will take place later in Porthleven Cemetery. Mr John Gilbert was the organist.Jean was born at Rame Terrace, Rame Cross, the elder daughter of Clarence and Bessie Richards. Jean attended Halwin School until the age of 15 and then became one of the first female pupils to attend Camborne Technical College where she qualified in shorthand, typing and bookkeeping which she put to good use during her 11 years employed by J C Annear and Co., Penryn, as a secretary. The family moved to Mill Close, Porthleven, in 1977.
Jean’s musical talent was inherited from her mother and her grandfather Richards, who was bandmaster of Rame Cross Band, and first became apparent at an early age whilst attending Edgcumbe Sunday School. Jean’s piano teacher was Mrs Myra Bonny at Longdowns and she became a pupil at a school of music in Falmouth run by Mrs Roskilly. In her teens, Jean became a member of Rame Cross Concert Party, formed by her mother, entertaining folk around various parts of the county. Jean was also a member of the chapel choir and youth club and eventually became official organist having been taught by the late Miss May Thomas. She was official organist at Chynhale for many years, organising numerous musical events there.
Denys and Jean were married in 1960 and celebrated their Ruby Wedding three years ago. They had two daughters, Sonia and Tania, and the family attended both Sithney and Chynhale chapels, where Jean was always involved with music.
During her lifetime, Jean accompanied many talented local soloists and organised numerous musical concerts. While at Chynhale, she formed a girls’ choir which entertained at many venues in West Cornwall. Jean acted as deputy pianist and deputy conductor for the Porthleven based Keynvor Singers and was rehearsal pianist for the Helston Opera Group. One of her happiest times was the nine years that she spent as the accompanist for the Cury Players popular pantomimes. Jean acted as relief organist for many places of worship in the Helston area but one of her favourite occupations was to play at flower festivals.
Jean was a local correspondent for the Falmouth Packet, Helston Packet and other publications for many years and helped with numerous fundraising events for Porthleven Cricket Club of which Denys has been a member for 40 years and is currently their president.
Jean was an ardent supporter and treasurer of the Porthleven Auxiliary of the RSPCA spending many hours at home knitting items for fund-raising events. Recently she was pleased to become a member of the management committee of the RSPCA Centre at St Columb.

Although music played a major role in Jean’s life, her family and home always came first. The recent highlight of her life was the arrival of her dear grandson, Matthew, last July.

Represented at the funeral were Balwest, Breaney, Chynhale and Leedstown Methodist Churches, St Bartholomew’s Church, Porthleven, St Sithney Parish Church, Porthleven Cricket Club, Porthleven Ladies Circle, RSPCA, Penzance and District Branch of British Heart Foundation and Helston Opera Group.

Spencer FERRIS has tractor send-off

A popular ice cream seller beloved by whole generations of families has been given a fitting send-off following his death aged 84.
For 44 years Spencer Ferris could be found at Porthleven’s Harbour Head, serving cooling treats to customers.
He retired 19 years ago, when he reached 65, giving him more time to spend on his other interest in life – vintage tractors – and he spent many years with son Chris attending rallies and road runs.
After his death on June 9 the local vintage tractor community pulled out all the stops to do him proud, resulting in four of his friends accompanying Spencer on his final trip, to Treswithian Downs Crematorium on June 19, with two in front of the hearse and two behind.
On the way they passed Spencer’s ice cream spot, where between 70 and 80 people stood, spaced apart, clapping and waving as the procession went past.
Chris said: “There was a lovely turnout on the Harbour Head, which brought a real lump in all of our throats.
“We are very grateful to Bobby, Wobbles, Terry and Neil for escorting dad on his final trip.

Spencer loved vintage tractors
“All of my family were deeply touched by the friends and locals who had gathered to say goodbye, and we are really grateful to everyone for giving him such an amazing send off
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent their kind words and shared fond memories, it has brought us comfort through a very difficult time.”
Spencer started his working life on his family farm in Gunwalloe, but after marrying his wife Florence and moving to Porthleven he asked her father, Gordon Uren, if he could try his hand at the ice cream business that Gordon had set up.
Gordon was sceptical at first, but later had to admit that Spencer took to it like ‘a duck to water’.
It was a job that he enjoyed greatly and he had the pleasure of serving many local children, then watching them grow and go on to serve their children and grandchildren.

“He always started the babies with just an empty cone and as they grew so did the size of the ice cream – one particular favourite was the ‘Spencer Special’ which had a small scoop of each ice cream.
“It wasn’t just the local children who listened out for dad – he also had one or two dogs who would sit by the van, refusing to move until they’d had their ice cream,” added Chris.
After being fortunate to have led a healthy life, rarely having to visit a doctor or hospital until his later years, he spent the last eight years receiving dialysis treatment three times a week at the Renal Unit at West Cornwall Hospital Penzance.
Chris said: “We will always be thankful to them, they gave us eight years we probably wouldn’t have had with him and they looked after him so well; he never once said that he didn’t want to go down there.
“His final weeks were spent at Treliske and we would like to say a big thank you to Wheal Coates/Kynance Ward for their care of him until his passing.
“We would also like to thank everyone for their generosity with funeral donations, which raised over £300 for the Renal Unit.”

HARDCASTLE, Nicholas Christopher 06 Jun 1952-15 Apr 2020

Nicholas Hardcastle, 67, of Porthleven, Cornwall, England, formerly of New Marlborough, Mass.
Nicholas Hardcastle died at his home in Porthleven, Cornwall, on Wednesday, April 15th 2020. The cause was complications from the COVID-19 virus.

Nick was born June 6th, 1952 to Constance (Connie) and William Hardcastle in Washington, D.C. Soon thereafter, the family returned to England when William became editor of The Daily Mail, and they settled in Garden Farmhouse, Carshalton, Surrey. It was here in the countryside not far from London, that Nick spent his first six years. In 1958, Connie purchased a home in Porthleven, where the family would holiday, and by 1960, Connie and her four children had moved there permanently.
It was in Porthleven, and especially at nearby Rinsey Cove that Nicholas fell in love with the sea. It was also here that his family expanded, and as Connie and Laurie (Nick’s stepfather) had baby Sophie in 1961, the headcount of children grew to seven. The family bought a large townhouse in Cathedral City of Truro to accommodate the now siblings John (b. 1944), Sally (b.1945), Susan (b.1945), Susie (b.1946), Nicholas (b. 1952), Connie “Little Con” (b.1956), and Sophie.
Nick attended Truro Cathedral School until the age of 16. He then attended Camborne Tech College to study for A Levels, but left both college and home halfway through, and at 17, was on his own. It was at this time that Nick formed a deep attachment to farming. While living in a cottage at Trencrom with friends, he worked planting cauliflower (called broccoli in Cornwall) and barley. It was also here that Nick formed some of his most cherished friendships, and began to play guitar.
In 1973 he and his friend Bill joined Nick’s older sister Susie in New York City, where an incredible number of adventures took place in a very short time, including making the handcarts for the market scene in “Godfather II.” Bill returned to Cornwall in 1974, and Nick relocated to Berkshire County Massachusetts to pursue his dream of being a sheep farmer.
In Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Nick got a job working for Shaggy Dog Studios, helping to sift through hundreds of Jimi Hendrix tapes. Here he met and married his first wife Pamela Read (a musician/singer who also worked at Shaggy Dog). They had two sons together, Asa, born September 1975 and Evan, born August 1977. Nick was the caretaker at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York, until 1977, and then caretaker on an estate in Southfield, Massachusetts from 1977 until 1984.  It was during his time as a caretaker and father of two sons, that he began raising sheep both at home, and at Flying Cloud. Then in 1979, he joined Bradford Wagstaff to revive Gedney Farm as a fully functioning dairy farm in the center of New Marlborough. The operation ran for six years, before Gedney was eventually converted into an event location.
In 1985, Nick began working at the dairy farm Crystal Hill Farm in Mill River, Massachusetts. Nick married Silvia Eggenberger in 1986 and they took over management of the farm from Silvia’s parents, Henry and Martha. Nick and Silvia’s first daughter, Theresa, was born in March of 1988. In November of 1989, their second daughter, Celeste, was born. They continued raising their children and farming, eventually converting the farm to grass fed, and by 1992, Crystal Hill Farm was the last dairy in New Marlborough. Milk prices continued to drop, and by the mid 90s, they were forced to sell the cows, the tractors, and wind down what was a lifelong dream for Nicholas. Of course, this setback only altered his dream and he and Silvia decided that he would take a year to write. While Nick’s talent is easily experienced through reading his poetry, it turned out to pay less even than farming.
From 1996 through 2006, Nick was the sommelier and gardener at Aubergine in Hillsdale, N.Y. Nicholas’ herb, vegetable and flower gardens were notable for their bounty and beauty. The gardens that he created and tended for Aubergine were often a source for Chef David Lawson’s plates, and the envy of anyone who grew tomatoes.
When Aubergine closed its doors, Nick worked as a bartender for Race Brook Lodge, a handyman in Hudson, N.Y., and Great Barrington, and then eventually became the lead pasteurizer for Ronnybrook farm in Ancramdale, N.Y., before semi-retirement in Hudson.
In 2018, Nick moved back to his hometown Porthleven, in Cornwall. There he was able to spend time with his sister, Susan, and her extended family. He quickly became a reliable part of the community, making many friends and plans. Never truly retired, he gardened for his local pub, The Ship Inn, and built his first sailboat, the Constance May, named for his sister Connie. He completed the Constance May and took his grandsons on its maiden voyage in the summer of 2019.
He was predeceased by his sisters Susie, Sally, and Connie and his brother John. Nicholas leaves behind his four children, Asa (Tracey), Evan (Sarah), Theresa (Tony), and Celeste (Mike). His grandsons, Winter and Nicholas. His sisters, Susan Tinley and Sophie Palmer (Dave). His nieces and nephews, Alice, Cain, Harley, Jake, Jessie, Joe, Luke, Nicholas, Paul, Rosie, Sadie, and Seth. He also leaves behind him an incredible number of friends from Cornwall UK, Berkshire County Massachusetts, and Hudson New York. Nick touched everyone he met with his wit, humor, kindness, and love. He was also a dreamer, who never stopped thinking about his next endeavour.

ROBERTS Jef     1933-2015 08 Jul 2015 age 81
Mr. Jef Roberts, Porthleven, Former Mayor of Helston
Breage School Field was almost full of cars due to the large number in attendance at the funeral service of Mr. Jeffery Roberts, aged 81, held at Breaney Methodist Chapel. Pastor Bill Reed, a lifelong friend, conducted the service and Jef’s son-in-law, Paul Jenkin played the organ accompanied by Mr. Paul Benney.

Born on the 27th June, 1933, to Peter and Winnie Roberts of Tresaddern Farm, Ruan Minor, Jef was given his mother’s maiden name of Jeffery. He attended Ruan Minor Church of England Primary School, walking there after hand-milking the cows. Returning from school, he would then fetch the cows in and feed the pigs. He also helped with haymaking, digging corn and picking potatoes. In later years, he went to school by milk lorry, along with his sister, Sue and they delivered the milk to customers along the way.

Jef loved to play football but he had to play in either plimsolls or hobnail boots as he didn’t own football boots. In about 1948, at the age of 15, he finally persuaded his Mother to buy him some boots. Unfortunately during the first match with them on, he was tackled heavily and fractured his collar bone. That was the end of football for Jef.

Having watched a conjuror at school, an interest in magic was ignited. Jef practised diligently in front of a mirror. In any spare time he sketched, and this interest remained with him all his life.

Jef remained at the school until he was fifteen, when he went to work on the family farm until the age of twenty-one when, following a disagreement with his father, he moved to his Granny Jeffery’s farm at Trannack, Lowertown. There was no electricity on the farm, but Jef worked hard there with his maiden aunt, May Jeffery. They later moved to Roselidden Farm at Trevenen Bal. Shortly after, Jef met the love of his life, Jeanette when he went to pick her up from Porthleven to sing at Ruan Minor Methodist Chapel. They married fifty-six years ago at Peverell Road Chapel in Porthleven. Jef always kept a diary, and the entry for the 30th May, 1959 read “Today is the happiest day of my life. I married Elizabeth Jeanette Williams.”

They couldn’t spare the time for a honeymoon, but instead they went on afternoon trips to places like Gwennap Pit and Land’s End aerodrome. Later they enjoyed touring with the Christian Caravan Club. Jef was also a member of the Cornish Magical Society, and he performed at parties, hotels, after-dinner events, etc. He was resident magician one night a week at the Hayle Towans Holiday Camp. His stage name was “Jefro – the Cornish Magitainer”.

Jef became a councillor and was Mayor of Helston in the years 1977-78 and again in 1980-81. Jef and Jeanette met the Queen during their first year of Office, during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

Jef held a variety of jobs such as a travelling salesman, installing fire extinguishers, teaching cycling profiency in schools, and a driver for the St. John Ambulance. He also started the Porthleven School of Motoring, and a picture-framing business at the Harbour Head in Porthleven.

Jef and Jeanette were blessed with two daughters, Heather and Helen, and later six grandchildren.

Jef adored them all, and shared with them his lifelong love of learning about everything. Helen read a poem during the service, and Heather, who lives in Australia, gave the eulogy. His grandchildren also paid tribute to him.

Jef and Jeanette shared a lifelong strong faith and love of church, and Jef had been a member of many churches, including Ruan Minor, Ebenezer, Lowertown, Breage, Peverell Road and Fore Street, the Apostolic, and then Breaney. He was one of the editors of “The Grapevine” – the church magazine at Breaney, along with his great friend, Bill Reed.

The retiring collection was for The Leprosy Mission and Cornwall Hospice Care.

The bearers were his grandsons.
