Penrose Estate etc

Before the “new” road to Helston was made, if you proceeded up Fore Street and what would would become Wellington Road you would end up in an arable field known as “Little Chy Coulter”. It was owned by Jame PETER esquire and “occupied” by John WATTERS. Early 1840s. In 1840 the Squire of Penrose paid for the first two-mile section of a road from Porthleven towards Helston. The road connected Porthleven to the Penrose estate and went as far as Penventon Farm……… In 1844 a new road was cut from Helston to join up with the Porthleven Road at Penventon Farm. The work was completed in May at a cost of £350 and Porthleven and Helston were then connected by the first proper road. Before that there had only been footpaths, cart tracks and coastal paths. ….. It wasn’t till 1875 that the track from Porthleven to ‘Stopgate’ (Roseladden Gate)was made into a proper road.
